Flood Watch Continues for Kawartha Lakes

April 6, 2016 - Kawartha Conservation continues its Flood Watch for the Kawartha Lakes, specifically the shoreline areas of Balsam, Cameron, Sturgeon and Pigeon Lakes. There continues to be a high potential for flooding to occur along the edges of shores, in near shore areas, and in low-lying areas, as a large volume of water is passing through the Trent River system. High winds and waves can exacerbate the situation on the downwind side of a lake.

Balsam Lake is high but expected to remain stable over the next 24 hours.

Trent-Severn Waterway’s Hours of Operation for 2014

The Trent-Severn Waterway has introduced a new procedure for some of the locks. This coming season, most locks are implementing a ‘last lockage 1/2 hour before closing’ rule. This means that if the lock is scheduled to close at 5:00 p.m. during the week, you must be at the blue line, ready to go in by 4:30 p.m. Many lockmasters will not let you in past this time.

Old Dry Stone Walls Bring the Scottish Highlands to the Kawarthas

I won’t forget the first time my eyes settled on the dry stone walls that stretch two miles along Balsam Lake Drive in the Kawarthas in the summer of 2006. A favourite pastime of mine is tooling along the region’s country roads and that morning, enticed by a yard sale sign, I journeyed down the meandering road that takes cottagers to Balsam Lake. Although dry stone walls are prominent in parts of England, I was hardly expecting to stumble upon the continuous vertical stone structure in south-central Ontario.

A Serendipitous Discovery at the Kawartha Arts Festival

We headed to the Kawartha Arts Festival at the Fenelon Fairgrounds on August 31, 2013 to peruse the display of art and crafts created by local and provincial talent. Since 1989, the juried festival, one of the most respected art shows in Canada, has captured the hearts of cottagers, town residents, and visitors from across the province, becoming a Labour Day weekend tradition for many.

Be Sure to Get Your Ducks in a Row in Coboconk this Holiday Weekend!

1,700 cheerful yellow rubber ducks will race down the Gull River on Sunday, August 4 at 2 p.m. in Coboconk’s annual duck derby. The first five lucky ducks to float, drift, bob, and careen across the finish line will win for their ticket holders. First prize is $700; second prize is $400; third prize is $300; fourth prize is $200, and fifth prize is $100.
