The Coboconk railway station restoration committee has been working to restore Coboconk’s historic railway station for many years. So far, this dedicated group of volunteers has restored the siding, windows, and the interior of the basement hall. They have also installed a new furnace and a fire-warning system.

April 14, 2016 - Areas in the north end of the City of Kawartha Lakes have been impacted by recent and continuing flood events. Areas along the Burnt River, Black River, and Gull River have been particularly affected. As water levels begin to recede, cleanup activities begin, and property owners haul damaged materials to the landfill.

April 6, 2016 - Kawartha Conservation continues its Flood Watch for the Kawartha Lakes, specifically the shoreline areas of Balsam, Cameron, Sturgeon and Pigeon Lakes. There continues to be a high potential for flooding to occur along the edges of shores, in near shore areas, and in low-lying areas, as a large volume of water is passing through the Trent River system. High winds and waves can exacerbate the situation on the downwind side of a lake.
Balsam Lake is high but expected to remain stable over the next 24 hours.

The Trent-Severn Waterway has introduced a new procedure for some of the locks. This coming season, most locks are implementing a ‘last lockage 1/2 hour before closing’ rule. This means that if the lock is scheduled to close at 5:00 p.m. during the week, you must be at the blue line, ready to go in by 4:30 p.m. Many lockmasters will not let you in past this time.

It was a Saturday afternoon in September and, while venturing along the Glenarm Road, I spotted a herd of cows lying down in a nearby field. Although I’ve read that cows usually lie down after eating to devote more energy to digestion, I’m certain these cows were cherishing the exquisite weather, the warmth of the autumn sun, and the fleeting gestures of nature. Like the rest of us, I think they know it may not last.

I won’t forget the first time my eyes settled on the dry stone walls that stretch two miles along Balsam Lake Drive in the Kawarthas in the summer of 2006. A favourite pastime of mine is tooling along the region’s country roads and that morning, enticed by a yard sale sign, I journeyed down the meandering road that takes cottagers to Balsam Lake. Although dry stone walls are prominent in parts of England, I was hardly expecting to stumble upon the continuous vertical stone structure in south-central Ontario.

Since 1989, the juried festival, one of the most respected art shows in Canada, has captured the hearts of cottagers, town residents, and visitors from across the province, becoming a Labour Day weekend tradition for many.

The first five lucky ducks to float, drift, bob, and careen across the finish line will win for their ticket holders.
