City Approves Streetscape and Façade Design Guidelines

Date: 02/09/2016

The streetscape and façade design guidelines took shape following a series of design workshops, public meetings, and feedback from each community’s advisory committee members. The streetscape portion of the document includes street lighting, gateway elements, pavements, greening, and street furnishings such as benches and bike racks. The façade segment offers insight into factors such as business signage and lighting, awnings, and overall composition of the external views of the buildings.

Now that the council has approved the guidelines, “they will be included in area-specific downtown revitalization strategic planning for each of the communities,” said economic development officer Vaughn Finch. “The guidelines offer theme and style recommendations that will be considered by downtown landowners, business owners, and by city staff when preparing detailed designs for future improvement and development projects.

Mr. Finch explained that enhanced streetscapes would encourage residents and visitors to seek out our downtowns. The improved building façades and overall aesthetic appeal will encourage business relocation to these areas while also encouraging the development of improved residential opportunities.
