Balsam Lake Provincial Park Offers Fun for Nature Lovers and Cottagers, not Just Campers

Date: 06/30/2016
If you want to absorb the sights and sounds of Balsam Lake, the park offers two hiking trails: the plantation trail and the lookout trail. The plantation trail passes through logging sites, old farm fields, and reforestation plantations. While you’re hiking the trail, take a moment to overlook the pond filled with wildlife. The lookout trail will take you through diverse landscapes, including a cedar swamp, a deciduous forest, and an open meadow. The highlight of the trail is the lookout tower. Climb the stairs to the top of the tower and admire the dark blue water of Balsam Lake and the verdant countryside. Whichever trail you choose, you can either take a solo walk or join a guided hike where you will discover trees, wildflowers, glacial formations, and wildlife. Natural heritage education programs at the park Each week during the summer, Ontario Parks natural heritage education staff offer entertaining and educational programs at many provincial parks, including Balsam Lake Provincial Park. The programs at Balsam Lake Provincial Park, which appeal to park visitors of all ages, focus on the natural and cultural heritage of the park and the surrounding area. The natural heritage education programs offered by Ontario Parks teach kids to appreciate and respect nature. The hands-on, entertaining activities offered every summer educate children in the park’s outdoor classroom. When you visit Balsam Lake Provincial Park, you will find the park naturalist at the nature kiosk, which is near the playground. The booth features interactive beach displays and hands-on material for park visitors. Challenge the park naturalist with your questions about wildlife, trees, and vegetation. Learn about wildlife, moths, and canines, discover the art of angling or join a yoga session Whatever your preference, there is a park program for you.
