Two local bird watchers built an observation tower on their property over two years ago, but the Kawartha Lakes council just voted it will have to be removed. My Kawartha reported, "Coun. Stauble said it would set the wrong precedent to allow the tower to remain when the proper planning path wasn’t followed. Both she and Coun. Junkin had concerns that the viewing tower was too close to the osprey’s nest." Always remember to be vigilant and fully informed before building any structure to avoid issues like this one.

A 10-metre private observation tower constructed by a pair of bird watchers near Lake Scugog will have to come down after Kawartha Lakes council narrowly rejected a motion that would have deferred it to a new slate of council. In a recorded vote that fell 9-8, council nixed a motion from Mayor Andy Letham that would have sent the matter back to the city’s planning committee to take a look at possible options for the tower owners.
