KawarthaNow reported, "Above normal snow pack in some areas and significant precipitation system-wide have resulted in extreme high water levels and flows throughout the Trent-Severn Waterway, which causes unsafe boating conditions."

Please remember with high water levels to be very careful! Water-based activities are discouraged by Parks Canada until the opening date as well.

Cottage Life reported, "On April 30, the federal government lifted the retaliatory tariff imposed on boats imported from the United States. The rollback comes after nearly a year of lobbying from Canada’s boating industry."

These tariffs were implemented as a retaliation to the US tariffs imposed on some Canadian metals. They impacted Canada's boating industry and have now been lifted!

Cottage Life reported, "The Act makes abandoning a vessel and irresponsible vessel management illegal in Canada. The law makes it illegal for someone to allow a vessel to become a wreck by failing to maintain it, and for anyone in charge of a vessel 'to knowingly cause it to sink or partially sink or to be stranded or grounded, including on the shore.'"

The boat has to be left for two years and the government is in charge of proving the boat is abandoned if they want to pursue the matter. So, if you "abandon" your boat for the winter you don't have to worry about it.

91.9 reported, "The City of Kawartha Lakes is reminding residents who live or have property near flood prone areas to subscribe to its municipal flooding news and take proactive steps to prepare for the season."

Remember to be very careful with high water levels. Most importantly, do not try to drive through roads that are significantly flooded. Keep children and pets away from the edge of any bodies of water.

Depending on the outcome, this could potentially affect other lakes in the U.S. and even Canada! The overall goal is the health of the lake which is great, but who else would be affected?

Cottage Life reported that many lakes are low in calcium – but the ash could help. "The idea is to take the ash—which is about 30 per cent calcium, along with other nutrients including potassium and phosphorus—and begin sprinkling it in test plots in the region’s maple sugar bushes."

Try sprinkling some of the ash around maple trees on your property to help! Eventually you may be able to take your ash to a waste station so it can be utilized by this project. Cottagers have a lot of campfires – we could really make a difference!
