Try Your Hand at Ice-Fishing on Sturgeon Lake this Weekend

Date: 02/19/2014
Fenelon Falls Secondary School has organized the trip, which will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 22. About ice-fishing Ice-fishing is a decidedly social event. After all, there is no limit to the number of people you can accommodate on the ice as opposed to the few you can squeeze into a boat. Ice-fishermen enjoy the lengthy conversational banter with friends as they wait for their baited rods to quiver beneath the ice. They also welcome the chance the sport offers to commune with nature by listening to the wind stir the trees or taking in the absolute quiet. Indeed, ice-fishing allows you to immerse yourself in winter. A hand-powered auger is used to drill through the ice and make a hole. For tip-down ice-fishing, a spool of line is attached to a small pole and then fed down the hole. Ice-fishing poles, which are often made of wood or plastic, are about 18 inches in length. A flag is secured to the pole, which will tip up or down, depending on the style of the tip-up, letting you know a fish has taken the bait and is ready for you to hook and bring in. Fishing license and equipment You do not need a fishing license if you are under 18 years of age. Some extra lines will be available if you need one. Cost The fee for the event is $2.00. Location Meet the group at Ancona Park, which is located where Emily Creek runs into Sturgeon Lake on County Road 24, between Bobcaygeon and Dunsford. Hopefully, there won't be too much rain!
