Be Sure to Get Your Ducks in a Row in Coboconk this Holiday Weekend!

Date: 08/01/2013

Spectators flock to the shore to watch and cheer as the colourful bath-time staples are released at the dam where they follow the river’s current and cruise under the highway 35 bridge to the race’s culmination downstream. In years past, "disco duck," a novelty song from 1976 has played while the ducks drift down the channel that joins Shadow Lake and Balsam Lake. The first five to be spotted by volunteers at the finish line will clearly have something to quack about. The Lions Club will sell barbecued hot dogs and hamburgers at their food trailer a couple of hours before the race. Free duck derby balloon hats will also be on offer. Red Path Sugar’s antique truck will be joining the event and handing out tasty treats. The duck derby, a joint effort by the Coboconk and District Lions Club and the United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes, raises funds which are distributed to registered charities associated with the two groups. You will be able to purchase tickets at most retail stores in Coboconk or from any Lions Club member for $5 each or $10 for three tickets. Derby tickets are sold out quickly. Visit the United Way team next to the food booth for tickets on the day of the event. Members of the Lions Club will also sell tickets in the entrance to Foodland over the long weekend. This will mark the sixteenth year for Coboconk’s civic holiday tradition, which began in August 1998 with a decidedly smaller raft of ducks. Over the years, with the event’s growing popularity, more winged contenders have joined the derby. The event attracts many visitors to town and raises money for worthy causes. Indeed, the duck derby is typically the busiest business day in Coboconk, a well-known hub for cottagers and visitors to Balsam Lake Provincial Park. Don’t duck the action at Highway 35 and the Gull River this long weekend. It promises to be a fun-filled afternoon to fit the bill for the whole family.

You’d be daffy to miss it!
